Current Mood: indescribable I thought my my grocery bill was going up.
I'm very glad that a) I don't eat much, and neither does Tommy; and b) I depend mainly on beans, followed by slightly more exotic grains (amaranth & quinoa, usually), and less on flour and (white) rice.
I confess that this was something I started to wonder about idly, back in the day, when all those small farms were being bought by developers and turned into ugly condos, etc. I wondered somewhat less idly when I read about all those hectares (or whatever measurement) of land being devoted to fuel crops instead of food crops...and started getting kinda worried the last time I drove around the Bakersfield area and saw what used to be miles of farmland turned into more ugly housing.
"Where the hell is the food going to come from?" I thought.
I mean, seriously - do people ever stop to think about where their food comes from, or do they just think that because they need food, the food's just gonna be there? The Food Fairy will be sure that it comes to the supermarket regular. Like the opposite of the Tooth Fairy. You give her money, and she brings you food. You don't need arable land, you just need to trust your Food Fairy and she'll take care of you... |
